About Reunion Island

Réunion, previously called Île Bourbon, is an overseas department and region of France and an island in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar and 175 km southwest of Mauritius. It has a population of approximately 860,000.

The island has been inhabited since the 16th century, when people from France and Madagascar settled there. Slavery was abolished on 20 December 1848. However, later on indentured workers were brought to Réunion from India. The island became an overseas department of France in 1946.

The official language is French. In addition, the majority of the region’s population speaks Réunion Creole.
Administratively, Réunion is one of the overseas departments of France, part of the Eurozone and its currency is the EURO.

The island is 63 km long; 45 km wide; and covers 2,512 km2. It is above a hotspot in the Earth’s crust. The Piton de la Fournaise, a shield volcano on the eastern end of Réunion Island, rises more than 2,631m above sea level and is sometimes called a sister to Hawaiian volcanoes because of the similarity of climate and volcanic nature. It has erupted more than 100 times since 1640, and is under constant monitoring, most recently erupting on 29 July 2019.The hotspot that fuels Piton de la Fournaise also created the islands of Mauritius and Rodrigues.

The slopes of both volcanoes are heavily forested. Cultivated land and cities like the capital city of Saint-Denis are concentrated on the surrounding coastal lowlands. Offshore, part of the west coast is characterised by a coral reef system. Réunion also has three calderas: the Cirque de Salazie, the Cirque de Cilaos and the Cirque de Mafate. The last is accessible only on foot or by helicopter.

The island has a strong infrastructure, with good roads, telecommunications, two (airports) and high quality hotels.

It has more black beaches than white beaches, and one can travel through four different microclimates in a day, from the coast to the volcano.

If a filmmaker is interested in shooting on Réunion Island, then the Réunion Island rebate is the only option.

However, if the filmmaker has a budget that is above the €4 million cap for the Réunion Island rebate, or if they are interested in shooting in other parts of France, then the TRIP may be a better option.

Eligible production expenses include:

  • Cast and crew salaries
  • Equipment rental
